We Hear You!

Were listening to your feedback on our running music!

Although we certainly think we do in fact have the best running music in the world, we also know, just like an athlete, we can ALWAYS get better. So over the past couple of weeks we have been surveying visitors to Rock My Run, to understand what we would do to make our services more useful. If you have been here before then you have probably seen the little black rectangle in the bottom right of the screen that pops up (hopefully unobtrusively!) and asks you one quick question.

Now that we have collected a bunch of responses, I thought I’d share with you what Run Rockers are asking for, and as a result, what we will be rolling out to you in the coming weeks and months. Here’s a breakdown of how you responded:

Rock My Run running music survey results

Clearly more people run with their mobile phones as their music player than we thought! As a result were are speeding up our process to get into your phones (and hearts and minds 🙂 a Rock My Run app so you can have easy access to mixes on-the-go. For those that do run with your fancy phone, this will eliminate the whole download-import-sync dance you do today.

Unfortunately mobile apps don’t happen overnight, so in the meantime we are working hard on the next two things you’ve said you want: More mixes and mixes that show the BPM of the mix. Our DJ’s are hard at work (even while on vacation!) to keep bringing you new mixes of various genres. We’ll for sure be keeping up our one mix a week pace (there’s a pun about pace of releasing running music somewhere there) but we’re also working on a super secret deal to bring you more running music faster. Once that hits, we’ll let you know!

Luckily, #3 on the list, showing the BPM, is actually pretty easy – Colby is working on getting that in field in our database so you should see the BPM for each mix coming in the next week or so. Some of our mixes do rise & fall between BPMs so we’ll show you that as well and let you browse and search so you if you’re a runner that likes to have mixes of a certain BPM, we’ll make that easier for you.

In the near future we have some other goodies on the roadmap as well, including mixes for different types of workouts (intervals, Fartlek’s etc.), more mixes with voice-overs (from a real trainer!) and even allowing you to set the BPM for your mixes if you really like to run to the beat.

Finally, we also wanted to respond directly to those of you that took the extra time to provide us some more detailed feedback. Don’t worry, it’s still all confidential – we don’t know who wrote what – but we did feel like we should take the time to answer since you took the time to write!

Add more mixes (what would you like to see?)

“Still seems far too limited.”
  • Agreed. We’re just in our first month though. We’ll be expanding quickly!
“Eighties – pop and new wave”
  • Rad idea. That we can definitely do. We’ll put some 80’s mixes in the works.
“Upbeat house, electro, breaks”
“Longer transitional mixes – 15 minutes of slower, transitioning to an uptempo hour, then a 15 minute cool down. My runs range well over the 30 minutes to 45 minutes that i have seen a lot of so far.”
  • Love this idea. We just released the “Dirty Red Mix” which is 80 mins long but only has about a 5 min cool down. We can definitely put something together that meets this format
“Include some less mainstream music (Graffiti6, Phoenix, The Shins, MGMT, etc…) Mash that up with some smooth transitions and some remixes/bass lines…. that would be sweet…”
  • Agreed! We have focused on more mainstream tracks right now because of the broader appeal but as we grow, we’ll be branching into more of the artists like you mentioned. Stay tuned
“I’ve liked every mix so far; would just like to see more quantity.”
  • On the way!
“Music in Spanish, french, portuguese, samba mixes for example”
  • Para ser honesto, esto no es nuestro foco en el corto plazo (thanks Google translate!) However we’ll tap our network of DJ’s and see if we can come up with something. Perhaps some Reggeaton?
“More rock mixes with possibly heavy metal”
  • #$%@ yea. Like to rage a bit while you run huh? Don’t worry, they’re coming!
“Country”
  • Yee haw! Another area we really haven’t looked at yet, but we can work in some more mainstream country songs (read: Garth Brooks) into some of our mixes.
“If you use old school rock, please don’t change the music to hip hop when you mix it. I am a middle aged white woman, I want to hear my music on a mix!”
  • Hmm, well we do provide a tracklisting so hopefully you know what you’re getting before you download. We’re going to continue to do mashups because, well, mashups are awesome. But we’ll get some more “pure” rock mixes up as well

Make it easier for me to find mixes I like (any suggestions how?)

“Search for mix that contains a specific artist, bpm tagging, more granular genre definitions”
  • We actually do have a pretty good search bar at the top of the page. If you enter an artist or song, we’ll show you if we have a mix that contains them. The BPM stuff is coming soon and love the idea on the genre definitions. Will take us a bit, but we’ll get those in.
“Show a list of ALL mixes available”
  • We actually show a list of all the mixes, with some pagination to ensure its not too long of a load time. But we’re working on tightening up our “all mixes” page so that it loads less, load faster and therefore we can show you more at once.

Other cool ideas?

“Allow users to provide track listing for personal mixes”
  • Great idea. We’ve actually just produced our first custom mix, “Dirty Red” for Team Dirty Red – a running and fitness team in San Diego. They have been very happy with it so we’re looking into how we can offer this service to more peeps
“Speed up the site.”
  • Yup. We’ve already go designs underway to improve loading time

Keep the idea’s coming! With feedback from runners and athletes like yourselves together we can revolutionize how people use music during their workouts. Comment below, send us an email or holler at us on twitter with any ideas, questions or comments. We look forward to them!
